The medical field can yield amazing rewards, and it can be exciting at the same time. Those who brave the perils of the medical world can help others and maintain a decent standard of living. One issue you will run into however is that if you want to become a doctor, you will have a difficult path. With that being the situation, there is a bit of a shortage in the medical world. Luckily there is an in-between state, so to speak, and this is known as being a physician assistant.

There are some significant differences between the degree holding physician and the physician assistant. Physician assistant requirements call for a certification, of course, but they are not PhD holders. The benefits that accompany the certification are quite nice, and one of these benefits is the fact that you can operate inside a physician’s office. In addition to that there are many individuals that would prefer to see the physician’s assistant over the regular doctor. This could either be due to scheduling issues, or more likely because the price is lower. While a physician’s assistant should technically be operating under the supervision of a doctor, it is acceptable for them to work independently if they are within the same office as the primary physician.

If you want to become a physician’s assistant then you will be pleased to know that you will not be required to take quite as much schooling as a PhD. It may be hard to believe, but you’ll only need two years of education for this job. Along with those requirements however, every state will ask a potential PA to take a national exam.

Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam(NCCPA) — Those who take this will need to ensure they complte 100 hours of medical education every two years, and of course be certified in the relevant programs. An addition exam must be taken every six years.

As with any other medical related job, branching out is an option. You can branch out quite nicely in the medical field, taking on pediatrics, neurology, surgery, and even radiology if you feel motivated. If you wish to truly expand into different areas, you will need to have experience in other duties.

In the event you meet the physician assistant requirements, there will be plenty of work. These locations could include hospitals, outpatient care centers, health maintenance organizations, government establishments, and even schools. These are all options available to you!

Overall, the job responsibilities of a physician assistant will be dictated by the state. In some cases it will be acceptable for a PA to fill out prescriptions, and in some states this is a job let only to degree holding physicians. The job description will change across state lines, but a few things will stay the same. The most noteworthy of course, would be that becoming certified calls for some hard work. In addition to that you will need to establish a prior medical background. With that said, this job isn’t easy, even if it is simpler to get than a full medical degree.
